Current Mood: cheerful

Here we are again - our server had "broken" electricity all weekend, and thus I am sadly behind in my reading...
Made it to town for church Sunday morning, and had fun at lunch after trying to explain Halloween and Thanksgiving to all the Moldovan kids who are here in town on work visas (most of them have 2-3 jobs apiece, at fast food restaurants, hotels, or grocery stores.)
Did the Walmart Drag yesterday.....uuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrgh.  It wasn't improved by the fact that last week's winter storm down south held up all their trucks in Cheyenne/Laramie - half the shelves were empty, and Walmart drones were frantically hauling boxes in every direction.
Picked up a couple of dress patterns for summer wear - simple dresses that can be made up in soft cottons, perfect for hot weather- nice to be girlie every now and then! :-)

The halfway point of one end of the rushnyk - 3 little bands.  The first is traditional Ukrainian, the center a simple Assisi, and the top is a slight revamp of a "Yugoslavian" pattern from a 1890s de Dillmont.

I may finish this thing sometime before I go to the Home!

Current Mood: cheerful

It's a nice soft white-out outside; people are sliding off the roads and rolling their cars all over the county.  Today's SUPPOSED to be the last of it, though, and the weekend is supposed to be warmer...

On a roll with some new, non-"period" -specific blackwork patterns for things like samplers, table linens, etc.  I <3 playing with my virtual "crayons"! :-D  I'm considering on some things with traditional "folk" cross-stitch patterns too - or combinations of it all...

On the food front, today there is a big hunk of sirloin on the stove, simmering away in tomatoes, onions and chilis for the kind of chili Himself likes best.  Will add beans and corn later, when the meat is cooked to shreds - and don't tell me about "REAL Texans don't put beans".  Every Texan I ever knew had kids to feed - you better BELIEVE there were beans, very often more beans than meat!  Besides, gotta get the innards warmed up for Advent.

Decorating - still at the "almost" point in the front room.  Got a "big picture" up on the big thing wall, have a few family photos left to find a place for, and that leaves a bit of room for more icons, and for framed needlework (will need to do models of the new patterns, and then gotta do something with the models - some can be given as gifts, but some will live here forever and ever...)  Also need to get on the stick with the lap quilts for the backs of our chairs.  The tops are pieced, the backing and the batting are handy, I'm just having my usual attack of "fear of scissors" - hate making that first cut!

My youngest sister just got her first grandbaby, which makes her as "old" as me... :-)

And I FINALLY finished reading all the "Harry Potters".  Thanks for a good read, J.K. - kept me busy for  a goodly while.  Sorry it's over, really, but once Voldemort was gone, what was left to say?

And now off to stir my carne, and play with some blackwork....

Current Music: quiet.... lovely quiet....

Big wind storm yesterday - it brought down the top half of the old lightning-struck cottonwood out by the corrals, with a boom that shook the house.  That's the tree we found Tink in - Himself is now insisting that the tree fell because we removed the tree faerie from it! :-)

Allllllllllllmost done with the front room "demodel".  A few more pictures to hang, a couple of "throw quilts" for the chair backs to finish to replace the ones that don't "go" any more.  Also found a pic of what it USED to look like, for comparisons!

Started some color-work knitting last night - nothing big, just a cushion cover for the couch.  It's something I can do when my eyes are too bad for embroidery, and a warm-up for some sweaters I'd like to do...

On the BAD side, yesterday I couldn't remember how to operate my food processor (it has 2 buttons, for goodness' sake!!). I did figure it out eventually.     And then I dropped and broke it.   Argh.

And a "nice" that's kind of annoying - since I need the cane pretty much all the time,  the ladies at church have decided that I should go FIRST at Communion.  I don't WANT to go first at Communion.  First off, it's embarrassing to have everybody standing there waiting for me to gimp my way up there, and secondly, it's HOT if you're first in line...

Sigh.  At least Orthodox folks don't smack you on the forehead and yell "HEEE-yull", or tell you God's just waiting for you to pray harder...  guess going first to Communion isn't that bad, considering.... ;-)

It's COLD.  And slick and snowy.   Oh yeah, and COLD.
So we stayed home, and piddled around at decorating - we decided, though, that we don't like any of our Big Things (you know, that one wall you have a Big Thing instead of a bunch of small ones..) so we came to a halt while we think about it...
      Cocoa was helping...

And Tink was supervising-

We're bound to be finished sooner or later, it ain't that big a room!

Oct. 2nd, 2009 @ 02:45 pm Musings on Wizardly Stuff
Current Mood: curious

Am a few hours into "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" (the book, haven't seen the movie yet.)
Maybe I'm overthinking it all, but a couple of small things niggle at me -

1 - when do wizardly children learn readin' and writin' and rith-ma-tick?  DO they have to get ALL of it before the age of 11?  Are there classes at Hogwarts just too boring to put in the books?  Is every Muggle thing you'll ever need to know magically inserted into your head via the Sorting Hat?

2- sanitary facilities.  We know there are baths, we know there are toilet stalls and rows of sinks - somewhere in the main area of the castle.  What do you do after you've gone to your "dorm" for the night?  Run like hell through towers and shifting staircases and password-paintings?   Magical chamber pots?  (Sorry, house elf, a bit too much Spotted Dick for pudding last night...)  Out the window?

  OCD minds want to know.....

Sep. 30th, 2009 @ 10:24 pm Bad Ads - again
Current Mood: aggravated
Gotta stop listening to TV from other rooms - I actually HEAR what's being said.

Today's annoyance - the commercial from "nofoodtaxes" (or something very like that)  starring a very very vaguely Hispanic (maybe) lady unloading groceries from her car.  First of all, she must be the last person in AMerica bringing home her groceries in plastic bags.    There's a purpose for them, though - so we can see the contents as they are carried into the house by her children...
The script of the ad is all about how burdensome the proposed tax on soda pop and "juice" (ha!) drinks will be on regular folks "trying to feed a family".
Hey, lady - actually, hey, action group of sugar-drink-maker-people - SODA IS NOT A NECESSITY OF LIFE.  IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO FEED YOUR CHILDREN YOU SHOULD NOT NOT NOT BE WASTING ONE SINGLE PENNY ON SODA AND
FAKE JUICE DRINKS!!!Eleventy!!11!!
Here's a thought - kids are thirsty?  Turn on the tap.  Have some water.  Tah-dah!

  Humph.

Sep. 29th, 2009 @ 02:45 pm Sad and Happy
Current Location: in here somewhere
Current Mood: pensive
Sad - our old barn cat - she's been around here for 10 years - hasn't been seen in almost a week.  I miss her - she would always come for a pet...  on the other hand, I suppose I won't miss worrying about her when it's 60 below windchills...
Winter is coming.  The high for Thursday is forecast to be 46 degrees F.   Time to get ready for the cold - get out the radiators, put up the drapes, stock up the pantry to settle in for hibernation.

Happy - having my front room finally fit to be seen by decent people.  The half-dones were making me depressed - now I'm glad to sit there of the evening and enjoy the "nice".
The Inspiration Faerie has been fluttering around my head - new blackwork designs are lining up  to be charted and sent off into the world.  I always worry, in the quiet spots in between, that I will never have an idea again...

Relieved - the land taxes are paid.  Don't know why we always always have to wait till the very last second...
My mother's husband, who is in his 80s, is getting some help.  Your Tax Dollars Working In Silly Ways - he does NOT qualify for a home health aide, okay?  However, he CAN have - a home aide, 5 hours/week (helps him bathe, does a spot of cleaning, etc) - a home Physical Therapy aide x3/week   - an Occupational Therapist at home x2/week - a visiting Nurse x1 a week (all this to the house).  Wouldn't the Home Health Aide be less expensive than all these other people?  Sigh... Medicare works in mysterious ways its wonders to perform.....

Woot!  I can haz painted floors - a nice chocolate brown.  Probably need another coat, but we're going to hang with it awhile and be sure we like the color.  One thing is definite, now that it's nighttime - gonna need a bit more lighting in here!

Himself is off being a firefighter for the night, so it was just me for dinner.  Thought I'd take advantage by just having some fried rice (Himself hates rice).  Then I decided I was too tired and hungry to wait for brown rice to cook, so I tried quinoa instead - fried quinoa = yum.  Quinoa, a little chopped bacon, a little onion, an egg scrambling it all together, some cherry tomatoes on the side.  Supper!

And now I'm going to put my achy shaky legs up for awhile and veg while I consider the Redecoration Of The Sittin' Room.  Woot-woot!

   Yahoo!  I can haz  Senz O'Complishmintz! :-)

First off, a new design finished for Practical Blackwork Patterns - "Gillyflower".    It's a simple design with a lot of impact (the blackwork version of Instant Gratification, y'all!) but with 8 different "versions" of the flower, so the stitcher can fancy it up to the heart's content.

And second, a new freebie up for download at
www.practicalblackwork.com    - go to the "Freebies" page, and down to "From The Management".  Here's a sketch -

And in Home Improvement news, my front room ceiling - after 3!!!! YEARS!!!! is finally painted, we're painting the floor Saturday, and then I can FINALLY put my photos, etc, back on the walls, just in time for fall redecorating!   Woot!  I can haz a fit-for-company sittin' room! :-D

Srsly.
Go to your local store that has "Hispanic" products.
Purchase a soft-drink style can of Jumex Pineapple Coconut Nectar.
Pour it in a freezable container, and put in freezer until as "hard" as ice cream.
Put 4 fat tablespoons of vanilla yogurt in your blender.
  Add the frozen nectar.
  Blend.
  Enjoy pina colada yumminess........

Hand-tremors have subsided enough the last couple of days I could get back to stitching - have almost finished a narrow Assisi band on the church rushnyk, pics when it's done.  Yahoo - I can deal with not walking, but I NEED my hands...

The hole in my arm looks great - even less bruising than I'd expected.  Himself has offered to staple me to my chair if I don't start using my cane when going outside.  :-)

practicalblackwork.com is growing apace - didn't know it was so much fun "building"!  If I ever manage to learn HMTL and can do it my very own self, I may never leave it alone - always something new to add...

And again, temps in the high 60s today... is making us a little nervous about what this winter's going to be like...

And now we return you to your regularly scheduled LJ stuff!

Aug. 18th, 2009 @ 01:48 pm Ouch, Dammit!!
Tipped over going out the back door this morning and put the screen door latch totally INTO the back of my forearm.  Don't know how deep the puncture is, but it's now bleeding through its THIRD application of neosporin + pressure bandage.  Humph.  Hurts a ridiculous amount for something less than an inch long, too.

On the GOOD side, it's another cool day (low 70s), I have very little pressing (read-"stinky") housework,
and work on the website goes on apace....

I am half-listening, from the other room, to President Obama at a town hall meeting "up the road" from me in Belgrade, Montana.
Do you know what is all I cen really think about?

  Dear Mr President,
If you would kindly stay put in the White House, surely we could put the millions of dollars spent in security, travel expenses, etc etc etc that is spent every time you hop on Air Force 1 to a much better use somewhere...
Maybe a war vet could get the care he/she needs....
Maybe a crappy school could be improved....
Maybe some hungry folks could be fed....

   Kthnxbai.....

Turn me in to the White House Spy List if you want.  I know it's a radical thought, but STOP SPENDING MONEY WE DON"T HAVE!!!!!!

    Okay.  Done griping now.
