The resident loon just stated, in no uncertain terms, that men NEVER wore "coifs" and that the ONLY item that can be CALLED a "coif" are the embroidered items worn by women in the 16th century.

Which leaves a lot of period lawyers, scholars, etc, nekkid-headed and rather chilly....

"Aggrssive" being the keyword in pretty much ALL her mis-informations... :-0 Here's the text in question-

"I beg to differ. Last summer we had a long discussion on coifs and it never came up that these coifs were worn by men. If a man wears a cap in the day time, let's call it a cap and not a nightcap, and if he wears it under a helmet, call it arming cap if you will, but coifs are for women. Coifs are these things that lie flat. The caps are fitted and do not lie flat. Look at the reference books for details (Gostelow, Drysdale etc.) I know it's trendy to cross dress and whatnot but let's call a spade a spade and a cap a cap if you don't mind, and leave the coifs to the so-called fair sex."

Uh-HUH.

Bad buttonology...
This is the same person who, in the above-named discussion last summer, basically told Attack Laurel and others they didn't know how to make a "coif", and that all the museums display them wrong, and and and.

Yes, we definitely COULD call a spade a spade, but it would be RUDE. ;-P

Coifs lie flat? What is she talking about?

I don't much care what anybody calls 'em, but the white, fitted (or sometimes not fitted) thing that ties or buttons onto the head is what I call a coif, and both sexes seem to have worn them. If anything, men wore them more often in the middle ages, the women usually having veils and wimples. Let's call them an Orange just to confuse people.

Mmm-hmm. In her mind, the only "coifs" are the 16th-century blackworked things displayed in most museums un-constructed and laid flat so one can see the embroidery, and the word applies to nothing else. EVAH.

Methinks she has slipped her meds again...

The best piece of advice I ever got, back innadawnatime, was that the words "never" and "always" will make you look like an idjit faster than anything else you will say in your entire life.

Sweet mother of pearl, what a lunatic! A cap is the hat you wear *over* the coif. The coif is that nice linen garment that protects your hat/cap from all the icky stuff your head produces.

*headdesk* And it's folks like that who propagate massive amounts of information that gets repeated by well-meaning newbies who dont' know any better. Sadness!

Yes. That, especially. She also asserts that blackwork was brought to England by Catherine of Aragon - PERSONALLY. It NEVER existed there before, and didn't just become the style (influenced by the new Spanish folks and the growing fashion for showing more "undies" ) C of A apparently TAUGHT everybody in England HOW TO DO IT AND IT WAS COUNTED AND REVERSIBLE TOO SO THERE. ;-)
